DGmag Multiverses Issue 1 - Bring on the Hoods (29/06/23

Issue 1, DGmag: Multiverses

Released: 29th June 2023

Here we are y'all. The first exciting issue of DGmag: Multiverses is here! Isn't this exciting?

In this issue, Maverick and Shyla must attend a Riding Hood convention which showcases many various Riding Hoods through multiple dimensions. But lookout. A sinister evil rogue Hood has entered the mix known as Little Hex Riding Hood. Oooooh, spooky...

How exciting! Many Riding Hoods in one epic long story.

Despite the stuff on her floor, Shyla's room is still a lot tidier than mine.
I'm impressed.

Where is Shyla's other sock? Does she just wear the one? Methinks that
the dozy artist (me), forgot to add in the other sock somewhere in the background.

I'm amazed that Shyla isn't bloated or anything after that gigantic
Scooby Doo sandwich. I know that I for sure would be. Phew!

You... You not going to introduce yourself Bed Hood? Oh... Ok then...

All this magic is even turning MY stomach.

Wedgies? Honestly! What childish behaviour. Tsk...

I mean, to be fair this gives Shyla the perfect opportunity to
now pass wind and get away with it.

I'm amazed that Millus and Shyla are so used to that stinky potion.
Then again, A, Millus must cook a lot of potions that go wrong. And B,
Shyla must've used stink bombs like this before. Maybe even worse. (Gulp)

Oh. Look who FINALLY, woke up. Hello Bed Riding Hood.

DGmag: Issue, 85 - Sylvia, Bad To The Bone!

Issue, 85 - Released on the 22nd April 2023

Here we go again readers. The all new issue of DGmag has dropped, and boy is it a fun packed issue! It's also a Sylvia themed one. She insisted, so here we are...

At first, me and Ginger tried to pooh pooh the idea, but then Sylvia stole my bag of Pink Pig chocolates. And y'know know how much I love my Pink Pigs.

So, here we are with an issue which Sylvia gets the full front page glory. (Sigh) Issue 2 into the 2023 revamp and already we're getting told who to place onto the covers. If another evil character asks us, me and Ginger are otherwise engaged!

With all that in mind, let's read on...

The cover which Sylvia insisted me and Ginger made. Oh dear... (Gulp)

Ginger might have a point. Candi does like vanilla more than I do Pink Pigs.

I'm beginning to think that Sylvia didn't think this one through with
the cloning process. Perhaps a clone mark anywhere else than underneath
a smelly right foot would be better, ey Sylvia?

If every clone is a replication of Sylvia herself already, then how do they
all adopt different personalities in the first place? Food for thought.

Hold on... If every Sylvia is meant to be an EXACT replication now,
then how are the different personalities still coming through? I think that
Sylvia might not need to reverse any process here. In fact,
did her invention even work at all?

Out of all names possible, Bovril seems the one that suits this
snake like water bottle the most! I'm not sure why...

If penguins aren't allowed at school, then technically eating a
chocolate Penguin biscuit at school is also, not allowed. Right?

Mindi doesn't appear to have a ruler on her, and yet, the boxes in her comic
are all pretty straight? Explain that one Dominic the Illustrator? Did she
use a DG Bookmark instead?

He really is a rotter isn't he? I mean, one minute he's telling
Mindi off for making comics in class, and the next he's reading
a comic himself? Make up your mind Mr. Screacher! Honestly...
Some people!

If Mina's a ghost, who can go through things, then how did she
eat a biscuit and keep it inside of her? Maybe I'm questing this
a bit too much.

I'm not sure why, but this comic strip reminds me of a popular
girl's toy, alongside a popular boy's toy too. Might just be me though...

I'm beginning to think that these babies are becoming more and
more clever as the days pass. Next thing they will be having a
one to one in-depth civilised conversation with each other.

Oh dear. At this rate the bouncy ball might soon regenerate into
the future Doctor Who.

Some say that Scratch is still being chased by that dog.
Naughty Fang, The Evil Feral Mutt!

The Covers That Never Made It - The 10th Anniversary Revamp Cover Design

For DGmag's 10th anniversary, it was vital that I managed to get the cover and design of the comic, to match in unison with each other. This can be seen with The Beano's 2016 design onwards, the cover perfectly matches the design of the inside of The Beano. Therefore, The DGmag needs to be consistent with it's overall design and layout.

But finding that perfect cover design was a tad tricky. I wanted an idea of the new circle logo being kept in the left hand corner thus allowing the overall cover image to wrap itself around the rest of the remaining area. This was an idea I liked from the new Doctor Who Magazine cover which perfectly allows the new diamond 2023 logo to breathe without getting in the way of the rest of the cover. Therefore, DGmag would need to do something similar as the primary version on the cover is indeed, the circle stacked logo.

Shown above, we have the cover mock-up image, which was tweaked for the final version. Here, Candi's arms looked a bit odd as well as Jone the Bouncy Ball being present on the cover (now Jon again). I also went with using the updated Dom and Ginger design in the final cover as they have indeed, had a style update since last year's editions. Aside from that, not much else has been amended apart from the colour going to a more darker shade of blue..

Below, are the reject covers that never made it to the final version. You will notice that not much was changed in terms of the overall composition of the cover.

IDEA 1
Although this looks not too dissimilar to the official cover, you will notice the white masthead is missing, as well as the website link not being all in bold text. The comic strip advertisements, are also in white text and not yellow.

IDEA 2
On this version, the cover is a bit more stripped back, and would still use the DG colour scheme idea in a swirl around the logo. (In the 2020-22 revamp, it was as the masthead itself). As this was too alike the previous logo idea, I removed it for further editing to the cover.

IDEA 3
This cover is a very minimised idea, with not much on the cover at all in terms of adverts or clutter. While this does make the cover look tidier, it still needed a bit more on the cover to suit the new redesign's style.

IDEA 1.2
This is basically idea 1, without the colour swirl around the logo.

IDEA 4
The masthead idea is in place. However, the yellow part at the top is not. Also, the Dom emoji is not yet present, so a stand in one was used (an old one I had made in PowerPoint). Notice that the comic strip advertisements do not as of yet have my font used, so the normal default PowerPoint font was still present to advertise Bad Babies and Little Rude Riding Hood's strips.

IDEA 5
One that was very nearly used, the DG colour scheme was made to begin in the masthead, and bleed out into the cover's background. This idea would be present in all the issues afterwards to. Note that the 'It's our 10th Anniversary Special readers!' quote, was placed at the top of the page too. It was only after some emending, that I decided on it being placed at the bottom of the image instead.

To finish this blog, I have attached two mock-up pages for the comic strip layout. One idea, was to have the strips filling up the majority of the page, so no yellow or orange banners would be present. As I liked the idea of having yellow for Dom, and orange for Ginger being a feature for these pages, I decided to reuse the idea from the 2020 revamp, but instead redesigned the page, so that the black lines on the banners were removed as well as the colours being brightened up too.

DGmag: Issue, 84 - What A Revamp (The 10th Anniversary Issue)

Issue, 84 - Released on the 30th January 2023

It's here! It's today! The all new look DGmag has landed. Go tell your friends, shout it at your parents, go do a dance, and wind up all your teachers, well... Maybe NOT that last one...

Still, what a thrill! Me and Ginger are so excited. Ginger more so, and she wet her fur too! She had to change her fur, twice. It would've been once, only Ginger got scared by a passing pigeon who squawked at her loudly. The evil, evil blighter!

Read, all new strips. Laugh, at Riding Hood's pranks. Howl, at Rufus and Percy's page. It's a scream, it's a hoot, it's a blast, IT'S DGMAG!!

What are we all doing? There's a massive chocolate 10 cake behind
us! Are we not hungry?... Then again,
I seem more interested in this red balloon. Look, as I
point at it so. Red balloon! Hee hee hee! I like balloons!

If you agree with Ginger, then oh dear. Dear, oh dear...
This page might not be the one for you...

Awwww! How kind, he's given The Big Nice Wolf a whoopee
cushion pillow. And look, it works too!
He certainly has my vote for favourite Riding Hood replacement!

Why are my cats always hungry? This is plain madness!
Ginger's hunger is passing onto the other cats too. Ayra, is at
it currently. She's scratching my leg ne-ow!!

I like Candi, although I get the feeling she likes vanilla more than me! :(

You know how I said earlier that I liked balloons?
Yeh, I think I've gone off them now...

Some say, that Lucy is STILL, in that nappy. What a nightmare...

Don't worry readers. It was only cheap PVA glue. So, Diddums
manged to get free quite easily once I helped him. Poor cat!

To be honest Tam, maybe muesli would be a healthier breakfast
for you. I would take advice of this news. Now, where's
that Nesquik cereal?

Luckily, me and Ginger were nearby. We gave the two girls
a tall glass of milk, and I don't think I've ever seen two
glasses of milk being drunk so fast before.

If this is what the new Daleks look like in Doctor Who, then
I might not be able to watch the show again! Not without laughing
all way through anyway...

Oo wee oo. Ha ha, ha ha! Ha ha, ha ha!

If that smell was actually Hood's parp, then oh dear. Dear, oh dear...

Those clockwork mice were enough to WIND US UP!

DGMAG GONE WRONG

(Sigh) These things happen. So, let's read the Sylvia story again, with the red emphasised text. Normally I like to keep the format consistent. So, this was supposed to remain all in black text, not red emphasised text. This version was with red text so that I could edit it more properly. With that in mind...

Look, it really doesn't matter which version you read.
The strip's still the same story at the end of the day.

VARIANT COVERS!
